Beams & Bullets: Apollo FCS

The Jihad saw an influx of new technologies and advancements. Some became popular overnight while others did not. One would think that a system that became available in 3071 would be thoroughly tested, but in the case of the MRM Apollo fire control systems, it has not. Apollo adjusts the launcher itself using targeting data provided by the BattleMech, giving more accurate fire than typical systems. The rudimentary missiles themselves are still unguided, and while overall accuracy is improved, many MRM warheads still got to waste.

For something that costs more than an Artemis IV system (125,000 C-Bills versus Artemis’ even 100,000), its effectiveness is debatable. The increase in accuracy still does not make it comparable to standard missile launchers. It effectively gives the user a bare-bones upgrade for an already bare-bones weapon.
On the flipside, Apollo offers several advantages other missile targeting enhancements do not. With the Apollo affecting the launcher rather than the munitions, it negates the need for for compatible munitions. It is unaffected by the advanced ECM equipment that seemed to become standard issue during the Jihad.
For units with a lot of MRM launchers Apollo may be something worth investing in, as the upfront costs can easily be recouped over time. For those not reliant on such a cheap system, it may be smarter to look into other options.
